Honor Societies

National Honor Society

Sponsor:

Melinda DiGirolamo

Description:

National Honor Society recognizes scholarship, character, service, and leadership. Membership is by invitation only. Students who meet the minimum GPA requirement and pass an administrative check will be contacted by mail in June that they will be eligible to seek candidacy during the next school year. A mandatory meeting will be held in September of the school year students are eligible. Candidate packets will be disseminated and the application process will be thoroughly explained.

Requirements:

1. Have a minimum cumulative non-weighted GPA of 3.5 at the end of the sophomore or junior year.
2. Pass an administrative review of their discipline record during the years prior to potential membership. Students with the minimum GPA who have office referrals may be refused the opportunity to apply.
3. Document no less than 20 community service hours earned between June 1st & the beginning of second semester of the year they wish to seek candidacy. It is the candidate’s responsibility to submit and keep hours updated on forms provided at the initial meeting.
4. Are endorsed for their leadership ability by a teacher, coach, or sponsor. The student must identify two organizations where they demonstrated leadership any time while they were a student in high school. This is different than participation. They will write an essay about how their leadership impacted the organization and have it signed by the teacher/sponsor/coach. At least one of the signatures must be from an SME staff member. Parents may not endorse their student for leadership.
5. Are reviewed by the entire Shawnee Mission East staff and endorsed for the demonstration of good character as a citizen of SME. This will include before and after school, classroom participation, sports, activities, and involvement at school sponsored events. Issues of character may deny membership or defer a chance for admittance until the senior year.

Meetings and Events:

Meetings are held six times per school year. Dates and times vary based on how NHS can support school efforts. Once inducted, students must attend meetings, participate in 10 hours of community service of their choice, and support one of the three NHS class projects we choose with an additional 10 hours to graduate as a member in good standing.

Interesting Facts:

We seek to initiate the top students at Shawnee Mission East for membership in the Lancer Chapter of National Honor Society. We are looking to induct self motivated students who can meet deadlines and advocate for themselves. Mrs. Murphy is available before and after school, as well as during seminar, in the counseling office to meet with any students that have questions. As we induct students and not parents, it is our policy not to return the phone calls and e-mails of parents regarding criteria and the membership application process for National Honor Society.
